Here are some of the best photos sent in from Moving Planet Day in Amherst. Riders started from the Mount Tom power plant, a coal-burning plant that epitomizes the type of energy production we would like to phase out. Walkers started from the site of the proposed solar farm in Hadley, epitomizing what we would like to phase in. Both joined at the Amherst Common where many others, including the Raging Grannies, gathered to sing and chant and talk with one another about the need to Move the Planet.

Moving Planet Day 9/24/11 in Amherst

Bicycle riders started at the Mt. Tom coal plant on Route 5 at 10:45, with a police escort, and ended up at the Amherst Town Common (north end) by 12:30. There were places along the route where bikers joined in, partway (Sheldon Field in Northampton, and behind Whole Foods in Hadley.) Details of the route are here.

Walkers started at 11:30 at the U Mass horse farm, at North Maple Street and Rocky Hill Road in Hadley, and arrived at the Amherst Common at 12:30, just like the bikers.

Bikers, hikers, and others gathered at the Amherst Common (North End) at 12:30 where there were informational displays, singing by the Raging Grannies, a chant, a song, and a little oratory.

Why did this happen? Because this event was one of many organized all across the globe (see http://www.moving-planet.org/) in order to draw attention to the urgent need to stop pouring Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere, and reduce the level to 350 parts per million, (we are at 391 now) to save the planet from the consequences of global warming.

Day of Action 10/24/09 a Success!

Despite downpouring rain, several hundred people gathered on the Amherst Common on October 24, joining people in over 5,200 events around the world to underscore the need for action on climate change.
