Community bike ride and walk, Sep. 24, 2011
Hundreds of people are coming together in Amherst on September 24 as part of the Moving Planet Celebration, a global mobilization to prepare for a future without fossil fuels. Similar actions will be happening around the world, on the same day. Two converging events are taking place in Amherst. A 2.5 mile walk is scheduled to begin at the site of the proposed Hadley solar farm at 11:30 am. An 11 mile community bicycle ride, starting at 10:45 am, will begin at the Mt. Tom coal plant. Both groups will meet on the Amherst Common at 12:30pm.
Click here for details about the bike route. The walk starts at the UMass horse farm at North Maple Street and Rocky Hill Road in Hadley.
This event demonstrates that we need to move away from old energy sources such as coal and toward to new sources such as solar. Moving together from where we are now, to where we need to be in the future. Participants will carry signs and flags that show how we can move away from dirty energy toward clean, renewable energy. This event is being run by Amherst350.org.
